MCT’s Institute Brings Beloved Storybook Character to Life in The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley JR.

MARSHFIELD, MO — Marshfield Community Theatre invites audiences on a whirlwind journey around the globe with its upcoming production of The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley JR., presented by students of MCT’s annual Education Institute. Performances will be held Aug. 7-9 at 7 PM and Aug. 10 at 3 PM at the Jubilee Theater Center in Marshfield, Missouri.
Based on the popular children’s book series by Jeff Brown, The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley JR. follows the story of Stanley Lambchop—a normal, everyday boy who finds himself magically flattened by a bulletin board and discovers he can travel the world in an envelope! From Hollywood to Paris to Honolulu and beyond, Stanley’s journey is full of music, laughs, and heartfelt lessons about identity, adventure, and what it means to be yourself.
This vibrant musical is the culminating project of MCT’s Education Institute, a multi-week theatre camp for students ages 5–15. While working toward a full-scale production, campers study the fundamentals of acting, voice, and dance, while also getting hands-on experience in backstage elements like props, costumes, and set creation. Each child enrolled in the institute has a role in the show and participates in an audition and callback process designed to simulate the real-world theatre experience in a supportive and educational environment.
“This program isn’t just about putting on a show—it’s about empowering young performers and giving them the tools to grow on and off the stage,” said Samantha VanWyhe, MCT’s Education Chair and the show’s director. “Flat Stanley is the perfect vehicle for young performers to explore storytelling, teamwork, and creativity.”
